Hurricane Simon Pulls a Second Ship Into Its Wake

Hurricane Simon has pulled a second ship into its wake off Mexico's Pacific coast: Carnival Panorama cancelled its Puerto Vallarta and Mazatlan calls, joining Royal Caribbean's Voyager of the Seas on a rewritten Mexican Riviera itinerary.

Voyager of the Seas docked at Progreso, Mexico

Hurricane Simon is redrawing the Mexican Riviera cruise map. Carnival Panorama, on an eight-night sailing from Long Beach that departed October 10, has cancelled its Puerto Vallarta and Mazatlan calls. The ship missed its October 13 Cabo San Lucas call when rough weather made the water shuttles unsafe, retried on October 14, and now slots in Ensenada on Saturday, October 17, from 8am to 5pm. Shore excursions for the cancelled ports are being refunded to onboard accounts.

Royal Caribbean's Voyager of the Seas, on an eight-night sailing from Los Angeles that left October 8, dropped Puerto Vallarta, Mazatlan and Catalina Island. The changes came in two stages: Catalina and Mazatlan were removed first and Cabo was moved, then Puerto Vallarta was cancelled as the forecast deteriorated and a second Cabo stop was added, followed by two days at sea. The ship is still due back in Los Angeles on October 16 as scheduled. Guests receive nonrefundable onboard credit of up to $250 per person depending on stateroom, plus 20 percent off Cabo shore excursions.
